Max Stockburger (artist)
Max Ernst Stockburger is a German documentary photographer working at the intersection of traditional and post-documentary photography. He grew up next to a U.S. Army Garrison in Schweinfurt, Germany, where he photographed his childhood hometown as the U.S. military presence adjusted in Germany after rounds of base closures that began in the 1990s. From his personal perspective, he has documented the dominant American cultural and economic force in his city as it transformed over a period of years. The resulting work is a 132-page documentary photography artist book, with accompanying essays. This work received many awards, including the Best Portfolios Award at the Photo Triennale in Hamburg in 2018.
Stockburger graduated in Documentary Photography (B.A.) at the University of Applied Science Hannover and studied Fine Arts at Hiroshima City University. He received his Master’s (M.A.) in Visual Media and Photography at the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld. Stockburger’s work has been supported by various international institutions such as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, and the German-Japanese Society.
