As a concluding activity to celebrate the students' work, German youth and teachers from the Hannah-Arendt-Gymnasium visited the U.S. Embassy at Pariser Platz in Berlin, along with college students from Duke University.
Visit to U.S. Embassy Berlin
Outside the Embassy, at the edge of the Tiergarten park, the student groups examined together vintage German photographs sourced from Berlin flea markets. Together they speculated on the back stories of the individuals and scenes depicted in the images. The student groups then entered the Embassy, met with officials, viewed artworks on display , and visited the courtyard, which features artist Ellsworth Kelly's "Berlin Totem" sculpture, a section of the Berlin Wall, and a piece of one of the steel girders of the Twin Towers from New York City.
